Talk about famous phone faux pas! In recent news, teen heart throb (or nightmare — because there’s no middle ground — you’re either a Belieber, or you’re not a Belieber) Justin Bieber tweeted the message “Call me right now” with a 214 area code phone number. Though the tweet was ultimately deleted, and the last digit was omitted and instead included a “?”, Bieber fans spotted the post and within seconds it was retweeted over and over again. Fans began guessing at the last digit, and by the end of the night, a Dallas man had received over a thousand phone calls on the phone number that he’s held for over 20 years.

PHONECALL?

If you fake it, according to new research from the Pew Research Center, you wouldn’t be alone. In fact, according to Pew’s latest research findings, approximately 30% of all the twentysomethings you see wandering around, talking on their cell phones are actually faking it (and most likely to avoid talking to you)! That’s right, cell phones not only provide us with constant connectivity to the online world, but they also provide us with a handy-excuse-in-the-pocket for people of all ages to avoid small talk or unwanted confrontations. While the twentysomethings are the biggest perps of this social phone fakery, they aren’t the only ones — overall, 13% of us fake it, admit or not!

No doubt, the telemarketer is among the top ten most hated professions there is, but have you ever wondered what the job qualifications might be for this highly coveted career? We certainly have, and this is what we think the job description looks like:

Wanted, thick-skinned, fast-tongued individual with bad timing and keen psychic ability to sense instances of crisis, household emergencies, the presence of house guests, and dinner time, and other hectic, untimely circumstances. Must be able to recite long paragraphs of irrelevant text in monotone despite constant interruption and threats from others.  Lack of personality must be apparent, as well as uncanny ability to irritate. The ability to misunderstand or feign comprehension of English or any other language for that matter is a plus.

In an age when our cell phones are capable of just about anything with an endless barrage of apps and functionality, our land line home telephones are looking pretty dumb. But are they? We think they are actually smarter than most people know, and they have been for a very long time – if you know what to do. Let’s call it old school style phone hacking, even though it’s really just knowing that your phone is capable of a number of additional services if you know the right command. Otherwise commonly known to many of us as “star codes”, vertical service codes (VSC) are special codes dialed on either a cell phone or land line phone before a traditional telephone number that initiate some special service.

The white pages and yellow page phone directories of decades ago have long become part of history. Not only can you find a phone number and connect with the click of a few buttons, but you can also turn the tables and do a reverse phone lookup to find who a certain number belongs to. Case in point, phone books are history. Outdated. Obsolete. Yesterday’s news, and to drive that point home, take a good, long gander at the artwork of Taiwanese sculptor Long-Bin Chen, and yes, indeed, you’ll see that old-time print phone books have now become part of history. In fact, they are starting to look a lot like dead Presidents and Buddha, because master artist Long-Bin Chen creates replicas of ancient sculptors out of phonebooks!
